New Poster: Netflix's Stranger Things

"Sometimes, people don’t really say what they’re really thinking. But you capture the right moment… it says more."

When I first heard about Netflix's new smash hit "Stranger Things", I was intrigued by the general synopsis and initial trailer. As with most things in my life as a human in his 30's, I expected to catch it "at some point" between everyday life responsibilities and hopefully find it somewhat enjoyable. When I finally put the first episode on when it was released, I was so quickly drawn in and transported to the world the Duffer brothers created that I was unable to escape. I was sucked into the Upside Down so strongly that I sat on my couch for an entire day following my new favorite characters grow, learn and fight through their journeys.

Through and through, I am an 80's kid. My first films ever (at the age of 3 mind you) were "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Muppets Take Manhattan" and I continued my love of films through adolescence being obsessed with such classics as: The Goonies, E.T., Aliens, Gremlins and the list goes on and on. My love for Spielberg-ian films was incredibly strong and would shape the kinds of films that would stick in my mind for years to come. As I ventured into the world of books at a young age (Oh, the joys of being a huge child geek), my tastes revolved around Stephen King. I remember at the age of 7 reading "Pet Semetary" and just being blown away by the terrifying world and scenarios my mind created just by reading King's beautifully crafted work. With all of this backstory on the table, it's really no surprise I fell madly in love with "Stranger Thing". A great friend of mine mentioned after she watched it and uttered "It's like the creators went into your mind, took everything you love and turned it into a show. This was made for you.". She was dead right.

The show was so immersive in it's storytelling and so confident in it's existence that I was so comfortably along for the ride. Often, I'll watch a show (I've watched a lot of shows) and hone in it's weakest link(s) immediately. Often it will revolve around poor casting, lazy acting, plot holes galore, poor cinematography, you name it. With "Stranger Things", I was so surprised by how quickly I got a sense of who these characters were and how much I cared about them almost immediately. The child actors especially deserve an enormous amount of kudos, as I completely believed these characters' bonds, personalities and responses to such incredible circumstances. These characters' arcs felt organic, not forced - which is normally difficult to achieve in 8 episodes with that many characters to service. The unfolding of the story kept me at the edge of my seat while also being tender and heartfelt. I could fanboy for another 18 paragraphs, but I'll just say that If you haven't given this a shot and love the genres of horror, sci-fi with some 80's Spielberg thrown in, Go Watch It Now!

With all of that said, the past few months have seen my creativity block getting the best of me. I'm a pop-culture based artist and found myself feeling as though I'd tapped my well a bit. This show and some eye opening life moments gave me the spark I needed to get back into the game by creating this poster piece. When thinking of all of the things I could have approached in a poster for "Stranger Things" I realized that there was an overwhelming amount of material to choose from. Instead of going bonkers by over-stuffing the piece with every character, every favorite moment, every story theme- I chose to take a page from my younger self's book. I thought about what worked best for me when creating my print for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and realized that Simplicity and being iconic allowed the viewer to build upon the tone created and fill in some of the blanks. This approach allows the viewer to go to these places in their mind about THEIR favorite moments or beats in the show while lending a suggestion through the use of silhouettes and shadowed figures. I had a blast working on this and it came to me organically and from the heart. Something this show has in spades.

Hope you enjoyed my mini-review and blurb on the process of this piece. Until next time you mouth-breathers.

NEW POSTER: ALIEN

Alien_LazMarquez_LR

Though I can go on for hours about my love for both the Alien franchise and Sigourney Weaver, I'll keep this post simple. The news about District 9's Neil Blomkamp signing on with FOX for a new entry in the Alien franchise (and the potential of Sigourney Weaver returning) sent me back to the world of these films thinking about the possibilities. I've approached ALIENS before, but thought this would be a nice time to go back to where it started and create a poster for Ridley Scott's masterpiece.

Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Poster

Avengers_Age_Of_Ultron_LazMarquez.png

Hey folks! So let me start out by saying this... It's no surprise that I'm a big comic book fan. I've mentioned it maybe a zillion times. Maybe a zillion and a half... But who's counting? It's also no surprise that i'm especially a Marvel fan. Since Marvel Studios took their properties (at least the ones they hadn't sold in the early 90's due to bankruptcy), they've managed to create a string of very strong films. Growing up, reading comic books, I would never have imagined these worlds successfully brought to film as they read in the comics. Sure, we had the Tim Burton "Batman" films, then Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and of course Bryan Singer's "X-Men" but it wasn't until Iron-Man that we started to see the pop, the bigness and the personality shine through of a comic book. Then... Joss Whedon... The Avengers... Mind Blown... Comic Book... Live Action...

So this year, we're being treated to his follow-up of the first film and I couldn't be giddier. How are they going to top that first film? Add in a kick-ass villain. Add some new Avengers to the roster. Bigger threats. Bigger stakes. See why I'm living the "giddy"? So what do I normally do when I get overly excited about a film? I make a poster... No one is shocked.

I was super inspired by the idea of this new threat "Ultron" bubbling up as a villain from beneath our heroes. They're trying to do good. Trying to find a better way, and they don't even realize it's right under their nose. I also loved the notions touched upon in the trailers (featuring that creepy rendition of the song from Pinochio) of strings no longer governing Ultron. But will he now try to control our heroes? I suspect he'll try. And that's all on this one!

Marvel's "Ant-Man" Poster

AntMan_LazMarquez_LR

I wish there were a longer/deeper explanation behind the reasoning for this poster, but honestly It was a combination of a few small things. First, it's 2015 and I haven't created something this year yet and really needed to spark my creativity. Second, this has been the unofficial week of Marvel's "Ant-Man" with the release of the trailer, the cover of Entertainment Weekly and the release of the new comic-book... I simply couldn't help designing a poster with a tiny hero riding a flying ant.

UPDATE: So... There was that time that the director of the upcoming movie and the writer for the acclaimed new comic-book series showed love for the poster on Twitter and I went to geek heaven...

'World of Warcraft' Propaganda Poster Set

wow_poster_set_LazMarquez.png

Prints, Framed Prints and Canvas Prints are NOW ON SALE at my new shop! http://society6.com/lazmarquez

Full Disclosure: Prior to two months ago, I only heard of the modern day legends of 'World of Warcraft'. I knew that it was a huge phenomenon and I knew that one could get lost in this world, never to be seen again. Honestly, the stigma surrounding WoW wasn't terrifying to me. I grew up being obsessed with all kinds of storytelling and the escapism provided from comics and movies. It made sense to me. I just hadn't really delved into the world of desktop gaming. Then two months ago, I jumped into the Warcraft world and though I'm no level 90 Mage just yet, I fell in love with the worlds created. The detail. The complex structures and quests. I immediately understood why the legends were true.

As with anything I immerse myself in, I wanted to learn everything I could. And thanks to one incredible person with a vast amount of knowledge, I was prepared to do what I do. I decided that given the context of the game and my love of the 1950's and the style of World War 2 Propaganda, I would take a stab at representing the different cultures in the game and create a snapshot of their stories. Each of these 4 posters was an attempt to get the feel of these tribes and in some, capture the characters that have impacted them. It was an incredibly fun challenge, each poster taking about a day to create before moving onto the next one. I suppose the best way to end this post is to say that I'm not ashamed that I'll be going home tonight, hopping on my computer and questing in the Underworld.
