I've had such a great time playing in the Pixar/Disney Sandbox that I decided to continue my Poster in a day tradition and try out my other all-time favorite Pixar film, UP. Just as many of you, I cried like a baby throughout this film. It was beautiful, honest and such an incredible journey to take with these characters. I'll let the following quote sum up things:
"Thanks for the Adventure - Now go have a new one! Love, Ellie"
I can recall going to the theatre years ago to watch Pixar & Disney's newest feature, Wall-e. At the time, I hadn't really dived to deep into information about the film and had maybe only seen the teaser. Still, I was intrigued by seeing what the company with an incredible animated movie streak was able to do with a little robot. What I didn't expect was to have such an incredible, heart-warming and eye-opening experience.
The filmmakers (with expert direction from Andrew Stanton) managed to build a world that was so sad and deep with subtext but also filled with a primal hope and excitement. Equal parts silent film and space epic, WALL-E allowed us to follow the story of two robot souls meeting and falling in love amidst their first adventure. To me, the fact that so much could be communicated with so little dialogue was astounding. I knew what these two felt and how they grew and it made me smile (and at times cry) the entire way through.
Over the years and most recently with the Doodle Duel: Pixar Edition, I keep coming back to find new ways to bring this story to life in my own ways. It's a testament to the film's impact, but really it wasn't just WALL-E and Eve that fell in love. So did I.
Though I can go on for hours about my love for both the Alien franchise and Sigourney Weaver, I'll keep this post simple. The news about District 9's Neil Blomkamp signing on with FOX for a new entry in the Alien franchise (and the potential of Sigourney Weaver returning) sent me back to the world of these films thinking about the possibilities. I've approached ALIENS before, but thought this would be a nice time to go back to where it started and create a poster for Ridley Scott's masterpiece.
The Doodle Duel with my talented friend Shalimar Luis continues with our tribute to PIXAR! This one took about 5 hours in total of us diving right in to the world of some of our favorite animated icons. I worked on "Wall-e & EVE" and she worked on "Merida" from BRAVE. Below are some process shots!
Hey folks! So let me start out by saying this... It's no surprise that I'm a big comic book fan. I've mentioned it maybe a zillion times. Maybe a zillion and a half... But who's counting? It's also no surprise that i'm especially a Marvel fan. Since Marvel Studios took their properties (at least the ones they hadn't sold in the early 90's due to bankruptcy), they've managed to create a string of very strong films. Growing up, reading comic books, I would never have imagined these worlds successfully brought to film as they read in the comics. Sure, we had the Tim Burton "Batman" films, then Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and of course Bryan Singer's "X-Men" but it wasn't until Iron-Man that we started to see the pop, the bigness and the personality shine through of a comic book. Then... Joss Whedon... The Avengers... Mind Blown... Comic Book... Live Action...
So this year, we're being treated to his follow-up of the first film and I couldn't be giddier. How are they going to top that first film? Add in a kick-ass villain. Add some new Avengers to the roster. Bigger threats. Bigger stakes. See why I'm living the "giddy"? So what do I normally do when I get overly excited about a film? I make a poster... No one is shocked.
I was super inspired by the idea of this new threat "Ultron" bubbling up as a villain from beneath our heroes. They're trying to do good. Trying to find a better way, and they don't even realize it's right under their nose. I also loved the notions touched upon in the trailers (featuring that creepy rendition of the song from Pinochio) of strings no longer governing Ultron. But will he now try to control our heroes? I suspect he'll try. And that's all on this one!
